IBM Study Identifies How African Businesses Can Overcome the Technology Adoption Gap

IBM has announced the results of a new study entitled ‘Setting the pace in Africa: How IT leaders deliver on the potential of emerging technologies’, which found that while nearly 87 percent of African IT leaders rank new technologies such as analytics, cloud, mobile and social media as being critical to business success, only 53% are pushing forward with adoption.

IBM’s survey findings also confirmed that 36% of the African businesses embracing emerging technologies could be considered “Pacesetters” amongst their peers in terms of their focus on prioritizing and rapidly adopting technologies. The survey of 180 Africa-based IT leaders across 29 industries in Egypt, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Morocco was conducted by IBM’s Center for Applied Insights, in collaboration with the IBM Center for CIO Leadership*.

Boko Haram Church Invasion In Adamawa – Bishop Speaks

“Some people tried to escape through the windows and the attackers shot at them. They cut peoples’ throats.”

This was how the Catholic Bishop of Yola, Mamza Stephen, captured the calamity that befell worshippers at a Catholic church in Waga Chakawa in Adamawa State when Boko Haram insurgents struck on Sunday morning.

Stephen told the British Broadcasting Corporation that he heard from the survivors that insurgents arrived the village on trucks and locked the church “towards the end of the service.”

According to him, the militants set off bombs, before burning houses and taking residents hostage during the four-hour siege.

He added that death toll in the Waga Chakawa attack was 30 and not 22 as widely reported.

Governor, Dr. Musa Rabiu Kwankwas, Tells Jonathan, You’re Not Qualified For 2015

Kano State Governor, Dr. Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso has warned that Jonathan is not qualified to contest for presidency in 2015.

According to the governor, any attempt by Jonathan to run in the next poll will amount to a third term in office, which is not acceptable to most Nigerians.

Kwankwaso, who spoke to journalists in Abuja, yesterday, advised President Jonathan to take urgent steps to solve the raging insecurity challenges in the North-East and stabilise the Nigerian economy and take a bow from governance in 2015, when he would have attained the eight-year maximum limit stipulated by the Nigerian Constitution.

Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President, under the ruling People’s Democratic Party on Monday said in Kaduna that the days of the ruling Party were numbered, declaring that the new National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, could not do anything to change the fortunes of the party.

Good Kid, M.A.A.D City vs The Heist. Which was the better rap album? Both were excellent in their own right, but in the end Macklemore's The Heist walked away Sunday (January 26) with the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album.

After the show ended Macklemore conceded that in his opinion Kendrick's project was better and should have gotten the trophy. In a display of class the Seattle rapper reached out to Kendrick after the show and told his as much.

Fashola Commissions The 2.1km Ejigbo-Ajao Link Road in Ejigbo

Babatunde Fashola,Governor of Lagos State on Monday commissioned the 2.1km Ejigbo-Ajao Link Road in Ejigbo Local Council Development Area just as he named the two bridges on the road as “January 27 Link Bridge” in memory of the victims of the 2002 Ikeja bomb blast.

The governor, who led guests to observe a minute silence in honour of over 1,000 victims of the horrendous incident 12 years ago, said such was avoidable if the authorities in charge had been alive to their responsibilities.

He said men, women and children perished in the Oke-Afa canal “because a national government led by the Peoples Democratic Party failed to do its duties. There is no other excuse for it. That was their responsibility to manage bombs and explosives and to look after the Nigerian military, but they dropped the bombs.

Similarly, the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria has faulted claims by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation that the NNPC had enough fuel to last the country for a good period of time.

The Executive Secretary, MOMAN, told our correspondent on Monday that the Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources had not released the allocation up till 3.30pm yesterday.

He said, “Up till this moment that I speak with you, they have not given us allocation yet, except if they are planning to do so in the evening.”

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has been slammed by The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),the commission on Monday filed an amended money laundering charge against him at a Federal High Court in Lagos.

At the resumed hearing of the case, the Prosecutor, Mr Festus Keyamo informed the court of the amended charge containing 40 counts and applied that the plea of the accused be taken.

After first count was read to the accused, his Counsel, Mr Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), raised an objection that the charge was invalid and his client could not plead to it.

Nadal Beats Federer To Reach Australian Open Final

At the Australian Open, Rafael Nadal, toppled Roger Federer to maintain his dominance over the 17-time Grand Slam champion.

The world number one came through 7-6, 7-4, 6-3, 6-3 and goes on to face Federer’s compatriot, Stanislas Wawrinka, for the title on Sunday.

Train Transaportation To Commence By March Through Port Harcourt to Bauchi

The Minister of Transport, Sen. Idris Umar, on Friday said that train services from Port Harcourt to Bauchi and beyond would begin by March.

Idris gave this assurance in Bauchi when he inspected the ongoing rehabilitation work on the segment of the rail lines connecting Kuru, Plateau and Maiduguri. He said tremendous progress have been recorded in the ongoing rehabilitation of rail lines across the country.

“The project is divided into three phases; we have Port Harcourt to Makurdi, Makurdi to Kuru and Kuru to Maiduguri.

“The progress of work here is quite impressive because I was here some few months back and what I have seen here today is a very impressive improvement over what we had the last time I visited.

“However, that is not to say it is all over until we see the train moving.
“It is our hope that by the end of March this year the train should be able to reach Bauchi and beyond.

Lagos State University LASU Shut Down After Students Protest

Management of the Lagos State University (LASU) has closed the state-owned university indefinitely following what it termed ‘violent protest by the students”.

This decision was contained in a bulletin, dated 23rd January, 2013, titled LASU management Closes University indefinitely.

The statement reads, “In the wake of the violent protest by some affected students of Lagos State

University (LASU) over the closure of the university portal for registration of courses for rain semester 2012/2013 examination, the university management has decided to shut down the university indefinitely. Also, examinations have been put off till further notice.

With this decision, students are expected to vacate the university premises until further notice”.

It will be recalled that the students staged a peaceful protest on Wednesday, 22nd January over the closure of the portal but the protest became violent on Thursday.

This came a day after the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly; Rt. Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji lauded the students’ union for using the e-voting system to elect their officers and advised the Prof. Jega led Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) to take a cue from the students and organize a credible e-voting elections in the country comes 2015.

A brutal punishment was allegedly carried out on a 20-year-old woman has been left fighting for her life in hospital today after a kangaroo court in India ordered her to be gang-raped for having an affair with a youth from another village. the punishment was carried out by the very same ‘court’ which found her guilty in a village near Suri in west Bengal state, 150 miles from Kolkata, police said.

Police said that all 13 accused men - ten of whom made up the kangaroo court - have since been arrested for rape. Among them is the village headman.

Mary Konye 21, is Found Guilty Of Shocking Attack On Naomi Oni

Mary Konye, 21, has been found guilty of the acid attack of Naomi Oni, The jury at Snaresbrook Crown Court reached its unanimous verdict following around seven and a half hours of deliberations after it was sent out yesterday afternoon.

Miss Oni's mother jumped from her set and appeared jubilant at the verdict.
Judge David Radford adjourned sentence until March 7 while psychological reports are prepared and said: 'In ordering these reports my judgement is that in all likelihood the case well lead to a substantial custodial sentence.

'But it will not be decided until I have had these reports - I do not want Konye to misunderstand the reasons.'

He said: 'I should make clear that, in my judgment, this is a case that will, in all likelihood, need a substantial custodial sentence. It is inevitable, but it won’t be dealt with until I have received those reports.'

He thanked the jurors for their efforts, saying they had looked at the evidence 'with great thoroughness, taking your time to reach your verdict'.

Lagos To Ban Smoking in Public

A bill banning smoking in public places including restaurants and on public transport, has been passed by MPs in Lagos state.

All logistics will kick off immediately Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola signs the bill into law. Offenders could face a fine of N 9920 or up to 3 months in jail, in some cases both.

It is also an offence to smoke in front of a child, all offenders will be fined N 15,040 or be sentenced to jail for 1 month or both.
