Lupita Nyong'o Wins Oscar

Lupita Nyong'o won her first Oscars for best supporting actress in 12 Years A Slave, while the movie won the coveted award for Best Picture.

Other big winners - Gravity might be the biggest winner of the night, but it was Kenya’s Lupita Nyong’o that came soaring out of the event as she snagged the award for Best Supporting actress- an award that many had all but given to Jenifer Lawrence for her role in American Hustle. While Lupita’s win will no doubt be a topic of discussion for many days to come and her award recipient speech would definitely remain a topic even longer.

Chris Brown Off To Rehab Due To Mental Illnesses

Brizzy has been diagnosed with mental issues,thereby forcing a Los Angeles judge to send him to 2 more months of rehab.

According to TMZ, Chris Brown was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Insomnia.

Brown is now on meds for the bipolar disorder and other conditions.

According to the rehab documents, “Mr. Brown became aggressive and acted out physically (in the Rihanna incident) due to his untreated mental health disorder, severe sleep deprivation, inappropriate self-medicating and untreated PTSD.”

Obama On Ukraine Crisis, Tells Putin To Pull Troops Back

US President Barack Obama has told his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin that Russia has flouted international law by sending troops to Ukraine.

In a 90-minute telephone conversation, Obama urged the Russian leader to pull forces back to bases in Crimea.

Putin responded by saying that Moscow reserves the right to protect its interests and those of Russian speakers in Ukraine, the Kremlin said.

Meanwhile, Canada has recalled its ambassador to Moscow for consultations.
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said he was also suspending Canada’s preparations for a G8 summit in the Russian resort of Sochi in June.

Ukraine says it has put its army on full combat alert after Russia’s parliament approved the deployment of Russian troops.

Wole Soyinka - Why I Rejected The Centenary Award

Professor Wole Soyinka, the Nobel laureate, said he rejected Nigeria’s centenary award bestowed on him because of the inclusion on the honours list of the late Nigerian tyrant, General Sani Abacha and other known killers and looters of Nigeria’s treasury.

In a rejection note headlined ”The Canonisation of Terror”, Soyinka observed that the inclusion of Abacha on the list does not only show a failure of a moral rigour but it calls into question ”the entire ethical landscape into which this nation has been forced by insensate leadership”.

He reminded those who have forgotten so soon that General Sani Abacha was a vicious usurper under whose authority the lives of an elected president and his wife—M.K.O and Kudirat Abiola— were snuffed out.

Another Fuel Scarcity Hits Nigerian Again

Monday will not be so interesting for commuters across the land as the fuel scarcity hits hard and more filling stations ran out of supply yesterday.

And where fuel was available, the price was outrageous, ranging from N105 to N250 per litre.
The immediate effects were long queues at such filling stations, scarcity of vehicles for commuters and exorbitant transport fates.

It was not clear when the situation might improve.
Many motorists in Lagos spent much of yesterday looking for fuel to buy.

They had to queue at fillings stations, and where such queues extended to highways as it happened in many cases, the result was traffic jam.

Many people who, had social engagements had had to cancel such so that they might not burn the petrol they had already.

Bomb Blasts Rock Maiduguri

Two explosive-laden vehicles went off last night in Maiduguri claiming at least 35 lives.

A military jet targeting Boko Haram hideouts along the Nigeria/Cameroun had earlier on Friday bombed Daglun Village, killing at least 20 civilians, survivors said yesterday.

Yesterday’s explosions occurred at the heavily populated Ngomari-Bulumkutu in Maiduguri.

Time was about 6.30 when a lot of residents were preparing for prayers.

Eyewitnesses said that the bombs were neatly packaged inside a fire wood truck, believed to had taken-off from the Sambisa Forest in Damboa Local Government Area.

One of the eyewitnesses, Malam Mohammed Buba, said: “Nobody can say exactly how it happened, the first blast occurred just about 15 minutes before the second one. Only few people were injured by the first blast, but while people were trying to rescue the victims of the first blast, the second one occurred killing many people.”

Kendrick On Macklemore’s Apology

Kendrick says he believes Macklemore’s post-Grammy apology, was genuine.

“That text surprised me, but Macklemore is a genuine dude,” Kendrick said in an interview with Billboard. “However it panned out, I wish him much success. He touched people’s souls, and no one can take that away. Really, the whole Grammy moment was incredible. Not everyone gets that shot.”

The entire hip-hop world felt Kendrick had been robbed when Macklemore won the Best Rap Album award at the Grammys, with Macklemore sending Kendrick an apology text which he shared on Instagram.

Pharrell On Controversial “GIRL” Album Cover featuring “No Black Female”

Pharrell defends his new album cover – GIRL.

Fans spoke out on Twitter that the musician didn’t feature a black lady on the cover of the album which he says is an “ode to women”. They were very vocal, even speculating that he didn’t think black is beautiful.

Pharrell who will be at the Academy Awards on Sunday, called Power 105.1′s The Breakfast Club to speak on the cover. He said there is a black girl on it and he dated her in the past.

Families Of Fela, Abiola, Fawehinmi, Soyinka Reject Centenary Awards

The Federal Government honoured 100 persons yesterday with Centenary awards as part of Nigeria’s Centenary celebration, the families of late human rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi and afrobeat king, Fela Anikulapo Kuti have rejected the post humous awards for both late Fawehinmi and Fela even as Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka also mulls rejecting the award.

Professor Soyinka is on the list alongside the likes of Professor Chinua Achebe, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Chief Odimegwu Ojukwu, Nwankwo Kanu, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chief Mike Adenuga and Pastor Enoch Adeboye, among others.

But Professor Soyinka said: “I would have preferred that the entire day of infamy be ignored altogether. I’m even thinking favourably of just ignoring the obscenity, then turning up at the counter-event.”
