59 Dead While 15 Hostages Still Trapped Inside Kenyan Shopping Centre

Ten to 15 hostages are trapped inside the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi as security forces lay siege to the building, which was stormed by heavily armed Islamic extremists yesterday.

The gang slaughtered 59 people in the attack using guns and grenades. It's not known how many British people have been caught up in the attack but a Canadian diplomat is among the confirmed dead (inset left). Terrified shoppers hid behind counters (left) as the gunmen went on the rampage.

Emergency services personnel were confronted by horrifying scenes as injured people stumbled out of the mall (inset right). Armed police managed to lead around 1,000 people to safety (right)
