Sir Alex was delighted to accept the honour and said before unveiling the sign: "It's a privilege and an honour to have a road named after me. You don't expect these things in life.
The award was given by Trafford council to commemorate the his 26 year spell in charge of Manchester United which cemented himself as one of the most successful managers in British football history.
Waters Reach, the road near Old Trafford stadium, will be named Sir Alex Ferguson Way as a permanent tribute to the 13-time Premier League winner.
