The UN Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria reports that with this election that took place on Sunday, Ogunewe becomes the first African to be so elected in 19 years of the association.
He took over the mantle of leadership from Col. Nattawut Sabyeroop of Thailand who handed over the Dean’s gavel and symbol of authority.
NAN reports that the MPAC is an informal group of individuals performing military and police advisory or liaison functions in New York with regard to the UN.
The association is aimed at providing an informal forum for professional exchanges of views and opinions within the community as well as with the UN secretariat and other organisations on all peacekeeping related issues.
It is also expected to familiarise new members of the community on how to work with the secretariat of the UN through induction programmes organised by the community among others.
In his remarks after the election, Ogunewe, thanked his colleagues for his election, promising to build on the strong foundation laid by his predecessor, and also pledged to strengthen the UN Department of Peacekeeping Operations.
