As lawyers for the athlete launched their aggressive defence on the first day of the trial, his advocate Barry Roux told the South African court that he intended to call a witness to testify that Pistorius screams sounded like a woman's.
Mr Rouz made the comment while in a bid to discredit one of Pistorius's neighbours, who claimed she heard a woman's screams before the sound of gunfire as his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was killed.
University lecturer Michell Burger had earlier testified that she heard 'blood-curdling screams' come from the house less than 200 metres away before gunshots were fired at the time Miss Steenkamp died.
'I heard petrified screaming before the gunshots and just after the gunshots,' Ms Burger told the court.Ms Burger's evidence contradicts Pistorius's version of events because the runner said he thought Miss Steenkamp was in bed and did not describe any woman screaming.
Pistorius earlier pleaded not guilty to murder, claiming he shot his 9mm pistol at the toilet door believing there was an intruder.
Roux grilled Ms Burger over the number of gunshots heard, asking why she heard four shots and her husband, who is yet to testify, reported hearing more.
'Was your husband right when he said five or six shots?' pressed Roux.
'I'm certain I have heard four gun shots, I don't speak on my husband's behalf,' said Ms Burger.
'How do you know your husband will be honest?' Roux asked at one point.
Ms Burger responded tersely: 'My husband and I are together for 20 years and I know him to be honest.'
