Birmingham City Owner Jailed For 6 Years

Carson Yeung, Birmingham City owner has been sentenced to jailed for six years for money laundering.

Judge Douglas Yau handed down the sentence in Hong Kong after convicting Yeung, 54, of five counts of money laundering earlier this week.

Yeung bought into Birmingham City in 2007 and acquired the rest in 2009.
But he resigned from the parent company – Hong Kong-listed Birmingham International Holdings Ltd (BIHL) – while he awaited the verdict.

It is not yet clear what his conviction and imprisonment means for Birmingham City, though for now the day-to-day running of the club will continue unchanged.

New e-Passport Fees

The Federal Government on Thursday in Abuja announced major reforms and costs in all the categories of the Nigerian e-passport.

The reforms are contained in a statement signed by the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service, Mr David Parradang.

The statement stated that the approval was conveyed to the service in a letter dated Feb. 5, 2014, from the Ministry of Interior.

According to the statement, with the approval of the new fees and categories of e-passport, a 64-page frequent travellers passport would be obtained at N20,000.

It also said that passports for 18 to 60 year-olds would go for N15,000 while those for people below 18 years as well as 60 years and above would be procured at N8,750.

Also approved, the statement said, was the charge for change of data/lost passport which would cost N20,000.

Similarly, change of names due to marriage, divorce and death of spouse would be effected at N8,750 while change of data on request would attract N30,000 as processing fees.

Fani-Kayode Re-arraigns Over Alleged N100m Money Laundering

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday re-arraigned a former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, before a Federal High Court, Lagos on N100 million money laundering charges.

Fani-Kayode, whose arraignment for the same charges was the fourth since they were first instituted against him in 2008, again, pleaded not guilty to all the 40 counts.

The re-arraignment before Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia on Thursday followed the amendment of the previous 47 counts of money laundering charges involving about N230 million.

It made the second time of arraigning the accused before Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia after two other judges had previously handled the matter.

Ofili-Ajumogobia, after the re-arraignment on Thursday granted the plea by the accused person’s lawyer, Mr. Wale Akoni (SAN), to allow his client to continue in the bail conditions he was earlier granted.

The judge fixed trial for March 10, 17, 18 and 19. The prosecuting counsel, Mr. Festus Keyamo, assured the court that he would call all his witnesses and complete the prosecution’s case within the four days.

In the amended charges, Fani-Kayode was accused of accepting various sums of money totalling N100 million between July 7, 2006 and May 11, 2007 without passing through a financial institution.

The transaction was said to have violated the provisions of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act which sets the limit of cash transaction at N500,000.

The accused was said to be, within the period when the offences were allegedly committed, serving as the Minister of Culture and Tourism and afterwards the Minister of Aviation.

He was accused of violating the law by further depositing the cash payments in his investment account with the First Inland Bank, Plc, Apapa Branch (now First City Monument Bank Plc) for 90 days.

Part of the money was also said to have been deposited in the account of his wife, Regina, and daughter, Remilekun. The accounts were said to be with the same branch of First Inland Bank Plc (now FCMB).

The EFCC named various individuals, including the accused person’s wife and daughter, his “close associate”, Mark Ndifreke and Ojo Agbor as those who executed the transaction on behalf of Fani-Kayode.

Others who allegedly carried out the transaction on behalf of the accused were members of his administrative staff, Florence Salau, Daniel Atogo and Supo Agbaje.

All the named individuals were said to be at large.

The offences were said to have contravened Section 15(1)(d) and punishable under section 15(2)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004.

He was first arraigned before Justice Ramat Mohammed on December 23, 2008. After the judge was transferred out of the Lagos Division of the court, the matter started de novo (afresh) before Justice Binta Nyako.

Following the subsequent transfer of Justice Nyako from Lagos Division, the matter was transferred to Justice Ofili Ajumogobia, before whom the accused was re-arraigned on February 11, 2013.

Risk Associated With Anger

Having a hot temper may increase your risk of having a heart attack or stroke, according to researchers.
Rage often precedes an attack and may be the trigger, say the US researchers who trawled medical literature.

They identified a dangerous period of about two hours following an outburst when people were at heightened risk.

But they say more work is needed to understand the link and find out if stress-busting strategies could avoid such complications.

People who have existing risk factors, such as a history of heart disease, are particularly susceptible, they told the European Heart Journal.

Reasons For Fuel Scarcity

Investigations by NE revealed that Contrary to claims by the National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) that the fuel scarcity was caused by hoarding, the problem is a result of late release of import allocation to oil marketers, gap in importation and short-supply of petroleum products to filling stations.

It was gathered that the first quarter (Q1) import allocation released in February by the Petroleum Product Regulatory Pricing Agency (PPPRA) did not only come late, but made it difficult for major oil marketers to import products.

An independent marketer, who pleaded for anonymity, said the inability of government to place order for the first quarter allocation early has resulted in the shortage of the petroleum products.

Oscar Pistorius Trial Update

Paralympian Oscar Pistorius 'may sound like a woman' when he screams, according to a witness who is set to be called to give evidence at his murder trial.

As lawyers for the athlete launched their aggressive defence on the first day of the trial, his advocate Barry Roux told the South African court that he intended to call a witness to testify that Pistorius screams sounded like a woman's.

Mr Rouz made the comment while in a bid to discredit one of Pistorius's neighbours, who claimed she heard a woman's screams before the sound of gunfire as his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was killed.
University lecturer Michell Burger had earlier testified that she heard 'blood-curdling screams' come from the house less than 200 metres away before gunshots were fired at the time Miss Steenkamp died.

Reasons For Centenary Celebration - FG

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday said the Federal Government decided to celebrate the 100 years of the nation’s amalgamation despite challenges facing it because of the need for the country to thank God for His faithfulness.

He said although Nigeria like any other country in the world had its challenges, the nation’s opportunities were more than its temporal predicaments.

“We have our challenges in this country like any other country in the world. But fortunately, we have more opportunities in this country than challenges. Our challenges are very ephemeral. Other countries have passed through even more difficult challenges,” Jonathan said at the centenary interdenominational church service held at the National Christian Centre, Abuja.
