Nigeria And Champagne Popping
The elite of Nigeria love their champagne, writes the Guardian (UK), so much so that the country is the fastest growing champagne consumer in the world, not counting France. This extravagance is largely due to those people occupying society’s upper spheres: oil wealth has allowed Nigeria’s wealthy to boom and splash out in equal fashion.
Nigerian tourists are among the highest spenders in the U.K., forking over more than four times per store than the average Brit. But the middle class is not as keen to sip on a bottle of Cristal or Dom PĂ©rignon and the majority of the country - nearly two-thirds - lives in poverty. This has sparked criticism from newspapers and social commentators, some of whom have called the love for luxury imports “obscene”.
